If you want to emphasize document viewing space on the screen, you may find it better to right click on the ribbon bar and choose 'Minimize'. This will free up all the room taken by the (pretty big) buttons. Bring them back by clicking on the corresponding menus. If you want to revert to having them show all the time, just right click on the ribbon bar again (once you've clicked on one of the menus) and click on Minimize again This toggles the setting back.
